Despite the name, the Big Friendly Choir (BFC) is a small community choir. We meet weekly during school term time on Thursdays for a coffee from 11.30am to start singing from 12 until 1pm. The Choir started as a small ‘singing for health’ group, which evolved and became independent in 2009.
There are no auditions for the Big Friendly Choir, and no need to enrol in advance. New members are always made welcome. Some members use sheet music whilst others use word sheets - it doesn't matter, because the choir leader chooses music to suit the abilities of our members. Our music-making is energetic and enthusiastic. We sing a variety of types of music including popular music and traditional folk songs from around the world, and we also pride ourselves on being a mixed ability group open to everyone. We are a voluntary, non profit-making organisation run by the members.
Dan Pate joined us in July 2023, taking over from our previous leader Mark Lawrence who was involved in setting up the choir originally. Due to his commitments, Dan is with us fortnightly, while we meet on alternate weeks to sing to recordings of the songs we are learning.
About once a term we do short concerts locally. These are relaxed, and informal, and take place during the day, Most people find that they enjoy the concerts once they have had a go, but if you feel that you would rather not take part that’s fine, just let one of the committee know beforehand. For concerts, we ask members to use black music folders, and to wear black skirts or trousers with a plain blue top.
We have no funding from elsewhere, so to keep the choir going and help cover weekly expenses, we ask members to contribute a weekly donation of £6.50 per session with Dan, and £3 on weeks when we sing to recordings. This can be done in person or via the bank monthly (£19 per month) to:
